What Is An Oral Examination and Why Do I Need One?
An oral examination is a procedure performed by a dentist in which he or she examines all areas of your mouth for any potential health issues. During an oral examination, your dentist will check your mouth for signs of tooth and gum decay, as well as any potential infections and structural abnormalities. Your dentist will also provide you with further dental treatment options (if necessary), as well as preventative care guidelines and resources.
Oral Examinations at Derry Village Dental Care
At Derry Village Dental Care, our family dentistry is proud to provide comprehensive oral examinations performed by Dr. Pooran Ghai, our resident dentist. Learn more about oral examinations at our family dentistry office below.
During an oral exam, Dr. Ghai thoroughly checks teeth for:
- Decay (cavities)
- Tightness of crowns (caps) and/or bridge if present
- Occlusion (bite), looking for high spots on fillings or teeth
Dr. Ghai reads any necessary x-rays for:
- Decay (cavities)
- Cysts or granulomas
- Bone level (gum disease)
- Cancers & other forms of pathology
Dr. Ghai checks the gum tissue for:
- Bleeding (a sign of gum disease)
- Periodontal pockets
- Unusual discolorations in gums that may be a sign of systemic disease
Dr. Ghai checks the other soft tissues, including the tongue, for:
- Oral cancer
- Any other pathology
Dr.Ghai puts all of the findings together for a treatment plan, a plan of action to restore (or maintain) optimal oral health. Dr. Ghai makes a treatment plan during every complete oral examination, even if the treatment plan is simply to have you return in six months for your next examination.
Your Infant’s First Exam
Just as pediatricians see infants to track their growth and weight, test their hearing and vision, etc., pediatric and general dentists suggest bringing in infants for baby dental check up, sometimes referred to as Anticipatory Guidance. This first dental check up is exactly what the term states: being able to anticipate what the needs of your infant/toddler are before a problem occurs and to guide both parents and child through the different stages of development. As a general rule, an infant’s first dental exam should take place between 6 -12 months of age or earlier if there are several teeth present.
During the appointment, with one or both parents present, Dr Ghai will perform the following:
1. Oral visual exam
2. Oral hygiene instruction and discussion of eating habits.
3. Fluoride and prevention advice.
4. Counsel on oral habits.
5. In case of oral trauma, course of action determined.
